  • Delhi High Court Seeks Response from Police on PIL Over Missing Persons Cases

    Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Delhi Police on a public interest litigation raising concerns about cases of missing persons in the national capital.

During a brief hearing, the Court noted that conflicting narratives are circulating in the media about the alleged rise in missing persons cases. It observed that before forming any view, it would examine the factual position after receiving responses from the authorities concerned. The matter has been listed for further hearing on February 18.

The hearing comes shortly after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognisance of the issue. The Commission issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Delhi government and the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, calling for a detailed report within two weeks.

At the same time, the Delhi Police have rejected reports suggesting a sudden surge in missing children cases. In an official statement, the police said there has been no abnormal increase and that the data has remained broadly consistent over the past decade. The force also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, warning that strict legal action would be taken against those who attempt to create panic by misrepresenting statistics.

The Court is expected to examine the official data and responses on the next date of hearing.
