Mahashivratri Celebrated Across India With Devotion, Temple Rituals and Holy Dips

The festival of Mahashivratri is being observed across the country today with deep faith and spiritual intensity, as millions of devotees gather at temples and sacred rivers to offer prayers to Lord Shiva.

Regarded as one of the holiest days in the Hindu calendar, Mahashivratri is marked by fasting, night-long worship, Rudrabhishek rituals and chanting of hymns in praise of Mahadev. Devotees are visiting temples in large numbers and taking holy dips at prominent pilgrimage sites, seeking blessings for peace, health and prosperity.

President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to the nation on the occasion.

In her message, the President prayed for Lord Shiva’s blessings upon all citizens and expressed hope that India continues to move forward on the path of progress. The Vice President said the festival, celebrated from Kashi to Rameswaram, reflects the country’s timeless and unbroken spiritual tradition. He wished that the blessings of Mahadev and Goddess Parvati bring happiness, prosperity and good health to all.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that Lord Shiva’s grace strengthens the country and leads it to greater prosperity. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla described Mahashivratri as a festival of faith, penance and self-reflection, saying Lord Shiva teaches patience in adversity and the courage to transform poison into nectar. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also conveyed his wishes and prayed for peace and prosperity for every citizen.

Uttar Pradesh: Sangam Snan Marks End of Magh Mela

In Uttar Pradesh, thousands are taking a holy dip at the Sangam in Prayagraj, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. The snan today also marks the conclusion of the annual Magh Mela.

Elaborate arrangements have been made for crowd management and security. Long queues are visible at prominent Shiva temples including Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Mankameshwar Temple and Nageshwarnath Temple. Processions of Shiv Barats are being carried out in several cities, while Kanwariyas are offering Gangajal to Lord Mahadev.

Madhya Pradesh: Devotion Peaks in UjjainIn Ujjain, the city of Baba Mahakal, large crowds have gathered at the revered Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple. The air resonates with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” as devotees participate in special aartis and rituals.

Maharashtra: Long Queues at Major Temples

In Maharashtra, devotees are thronging temples across the state. Long queues have formed at the Babulnath Temple in Mumbai. Heavy footfall is also being reported at the Aundha Nagnath Temple, revered as one of the Jyotirlingas.

In Nagpur, devotees gathered from early morning at temples such as Kalyaneshwar and Pataleshwar. The Mahashivratri fair at Pratapgad highlighted communal harmony, with visitors offering prayers at both a grand Shiva idol and a nearby dargah. The state transport corporation has introduced special buses to facilitate pilgrims travelling to key yatra destinations.

Odisha: Mahadeepa Ritual at Lingaraj

In Odisha, large numbers of devotees have been visiting major Shiva shrines since early morning. The ceremonial Mahadeepa is scheduled to be raised tonight at the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar. Similar rituals will be observed at the Dhabaleswar Temple in Cuttack and other prominent temples across the state.

Authorities have deployed police personnel and made detailed arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of rituals and crowd management.

Karnataka and Gujarat: Jyotirlinga Shrines Draw Massive Crowds

In Karnataka, thousands are visiting major Shaivite centres including the iconic Shiva statue at Murudeshwar Temple and the Srikanteshwara Temple. Devotees are offering bilva leaves and participating in Rudrabhisheka ceremonies.

In Gujarat, heavy crowds have gathered at the Somnath Temple, where the temple gates opened at 4 am and will remain open continuously for extended hours. Devotees are also offering prayers at the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga.

Across India, the festival reflects a shared spiritual energy, as chants of “Har Har Mahadev” echo from temples and riverbanks, bringing communities together in devotion and celebration.
