February 28, 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Gujarat this afternoon to inaugurate Micron Technology’s advanced Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging facility in Sanand. The event marks the formal start of commercial production and shipment of the first Made in India semiconductor memory modules. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw will also be present.

The facility has been set up by Micron Technology with a total investment of over ₹22,500 crore. It is the first project approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, the Government of India’s flagship programme to build a strong domestic semiconductor ecosystem. The foundation stone for the plant was laid in September 2023, and within a short span, it is now ready for commercial operations.

The Sanand plant will convert advanced DRAM and NAND wafers into finished memory products for global markets. With nearly 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, it ranks among the largest raised floor cleanrooms in the world. The start of commercial shipments from this facility signals a major step toward strengthening India’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.

The launch is being seen as a milestone in India’s push for technology self reliance. By producing memory modules domestically, the country moves closer to reducing dependence on imports and building a competitive chip manufacturing base.
