Preventing Iran from Acquiring a Nuclear Weapon
Trump reiterated his long-standing position that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon. In his Saturday remarks, he claimed that U.S. strikes last June had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear program, but alleged that Tehran had since attempted to rebuild it. He warned that a nuclear-armed Iran would be emboldened and pose a far greater threat.
The United States and Israel previously justified bombing campaigns by arguing that Iran was approaching the threshold capability to produce a nuclear weapon. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the U.S. intelligence community have assessed that Iran halted its structured nuclear weapons development program in 2003. Tehran denies ever seeking nuclear arms and maintains that, as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has the right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes.
Western governments contend that Iran’s level of uranium enrichment lacks credible civilian justification. The IAEA has described the enrichment levels as a matter of serious concern, noting that no other country has enriched uranium to similar levels without eventually developing nuclear weapons capability.
Containing Iran’s Missile Program
In both his State of the Union address and Saturday’s statement, Trump pointed to advances in Iran’s missile program as a growing threat. He alleged that Tehran was developing long-range missiles capable of reaching Europe, U.S. troops stationed abroad, and potentially the American mainland.
He did not provide specific intelligence details to support these claims, though Iranian state media has reported progress in developing longer-range missile systems.
Eliminating Threats from Iran and Its Proxies
Trump framed the strikes as necessary to defend Americans and U.S. allies from what he described as imminent threats posed by the Iranian regime. He cited Iran’s historical actions against the United States, including the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and the 1983 bombing of a U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, which killed 241 American service members.
He also referenced recent attacks attributed to Iranian-backed groups across the Middle East and threats to international shipping lanes. Trump pointed to Iran’s support for Hamas, which launched a cross-border attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, as further evidence of Tehran’s destabilizing role in the region.
Claims Over Protest Crackdowns
In his earlier address, Trump accused Iranian authorities of killing at least 32,000 protesters in recent unrest, though those figures have not been independently verified. On Saturday, he again referred to Iran killing “tens of thousands” of its own citizens during street protests.
The U.S.-based human rights group HRANA has reported 7,007 verified deaths, with more cases under review. Iranian officials have published lower figures, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stating that 3,117 people were killed during unrest, while another official acknowledged that at least 5,000 deaths had been verified, including approximately 500 security personnel.
Open Call for Regime Change
Beyond military objectives, Trump directly called on the Iranian public to overthrow their government. Addressing “the great proud people of Iran,” he urged citizens to seize what he described as a historic opportunity to reclaim power.
“The hour of your freedom is at hand,” he said, warning that continued bombing would persist throughout the week or as long as necessary to achieve what he described as peace in the Middle East and globally.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier confirmed that Khamenei’s compound was destroyed in the strikes. Trump, who monitored the operation from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, later announced Khamenei’s death on social media.
