March 02, 2026 : An international conference held at Guru Ghasidas Central University in Bilaspur has drawn attention more for controversy than for academic achievement. While the university administration has described the event as a major step toward strengthening its global profile, serious questions are being raised within the campus about expenditure, use of resources, and transparency.
According to sources, more than 100 luxury vehicles were hired for the event. Dozens of rooms were reportedly booked in prominent hotels across the city. The scale of hospitality, protocol arrangements, and overall grandeur has triggered debate over whether student fees or university funds were used to finance the event. So far, the administration has not released detailed financial disclosures regarding the total expenditure.
There is also discussion within the campus about alleged fundraising linked to the conference. It is claimed that lakhs of rupees were collected from various universities and academicians in the name of support. Some academicians are said to have arranged vehicles, hotel bookings, and other logistical resources. The event has even been informally linked to individuals seen as contenders in the race for the vice chancellorship, though no formal confirmation has been provided.
Meanwhile, allegations have resurfaced regarding irregularities and favoritism in certain appointments made during the tenure of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Alok Chakrawal. Although no official response has been issued by the administration on these claims, the issue continues to generate dissatisfaction and discussion within sections of the campus community.
The conference was organized jointly by Guru Ghasidas Central University and the International Centre for Cultural Studies. Several senior figures associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh attended the event, along with Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan. However, allegations of lapses in protocol and safety arrangements have also emerged. Fireworks were reportedly set off near the stage, and there were claims that fire brigade services were not present on site, raising concerns about event safety management.
With Prof. Alok Chakrawal’s tenure set to conclude on July 24, the timing of the event has prompted speculation. Some observers see it as a show of strength in the final phase of his term or as part of positioning for future roles. For now, the international conference stands at the center of debate, with questions over spending, appointments, and administrative transparency continuing to challenge the university leadership.
