August 31, 2026 : Hon’ble Mr. Justice Radhakishan Agrawal, Judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh, is set to retire on 31 August 2026, marking the conclusion of a long and distinguished career in the judicial service spanning more than three decades.
Justice Radhakishan Agrawal was born on 1 September 1964 in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. His father, Late Shri Satyanarayan Agrawal, was a businessman engaged in farming, while his mother, Late Smt. Kamla Devi Agrawal, was a homemaker.
He completed his Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) and later pursued Post-Graduation in M.A. (Public Administration) from Government Digvijay College, Rajnandgaon. He obtained his LL.B. degree in 1985 from Law College, Rajnandgaon.
Justice Agrawal enrolled as an advocate with the Madhya Pradesh State Bar Council in January 1986 and began practicing at the District and Sessions Court in Rajnandgaon. His early years at the Bar laid the foundation for his entry into judicial service.
In 1990, he joined the Chhattisgarh Judicial Service as Civil Judge Class-II at Durg. During his tenure in the subordinate judiciary, he served at several places including Bemetara, Raipur and Katghora. He also worked as Deputy Welfare Commissioner at the Bhopal Gas Victim Claims Tribunal in Bhopal, where he dealt with matters related to the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy.
Justice Agrawal was later promoted as Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) at Raipur. During this period, he also handled CBI cases for Chhattisgarh as Special Judicial Magistrate. His judicial career further progressed when he served as Additional District and Sessions Judge at Surajpur, Durg and Kanker. He also worked as Special Judge under the NDPS Act and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at Durg.
Apart from trial court responsibilities, Justice Agrawal also contributed to judicial training and administration. He served as Additional Director at the Chhattisgarh State Judicial Academy and was later posted as Additional Secretary in the Law and Legislative Department of the Government of Chhattisgarh.
He held several important judicial positions including District and Sessions Judge at Korba, Durg and Bilaspur. He also served as President of the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum, Presiding Officer of the State Transport Appellate Tribunal, and Principal Judge of the Family Court in Raipur.
On 7 February 2020, he was appointed as Legal Advisor to the Hon’ble Governor at the Governor’s Secretariat in Raipur, where he rendered legal assistance on constitutional and administrative matters.
Justice Agrawal has received recognition for his work in the judiciary. While serving as District and Sessions Judge at Korba, he was awarded the Best District Legal Service Award of Excellence (East Zone) in 2014, presented in New Delhi by the then Chief Justice of India. During his tenure at Durg, the district achieved the highest disposal of five-year and ten-year old pending cases under the action plan of the High Court of Chhattisgarh. As Principal Judge of the Family Court, Raipur, he was also known for settling a large number of matrimonial disputes through amicable resolution.
While serving as District and Sessions Judge at Bilaspur, he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh on 2 August 2022.
With his retirement scheduled on 31 August 2026, Justice Radhakishan Agrawal will conclude a notable judicial journey that spans roles as advocate, trial judge, administrator, and High Court judge, contributing significantly to the justice delivery system in Chhattisgarh.
