March 15, 2026 : Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Sunday emphasized that judicial complexes should function with the same spirit of service as hospitals, as people approach courts with hope for justice and relief.

Addressing a legal awareness camp after laying the foundation stone for the new judicial court complex in Mandi, the Chief Justice said that as infrastructure and facilities within the judicial system expand, the responsibility of the judiciary also increases.

He noted that public discourse often focuses primarily on fundamental rights, but fundamental duties are equally important under the Constitution and must be followed by every citizen. Justice Surya Kant urged greater awareness of fundamental duties and called for more grassroots programs to educate people about their constitutional responsibilities.

The proposed Mandi judicial court complex will be constructed over an area of 9.6 hectares at an estimated cost of ₹152 crore. The complex will consist of four blocks designed to provide improved infrastructure and facilities for judges, lawyers, and the general public.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who was present at the event, said the state government remains committed to ensuring that every citizen has access to justice and constitutional rights. He stated that the government is working toward inclusive development and social justice in line with the spirit of the Constitution.

The Chief Minister also highlighted that around 5.5 lakh pending cases have been resolved through Lok Adalats in the state.

On the occasion, Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, said the discussion reflects collective efforts to ensure that justice reaches every individual. He added that justice is not limited to courtrooms but also includes awareness of rights, access to legal aid, and timely assistance for citizens.
