March 16, 2026 : The Supreme Court of India has received applications from 293 lawyers seeking designation as Senior Advocates, one of the highest recognitions in the legal profession.

The applications were submitted in response to public notices issued earlier this year by the Court inviting eligible advocates to apply for the designation. The exercise is part of the Court’s periodic process to identify lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional professional ability, extensive experience, and significant contributions to the field of law.

In a recent notice, the Committee responsible for evaluating candidates invited members of the Bar and other stakeholders to submit their views on the applicants. The Court has asked for comments, suggestions, or objections concerning any of the candidates who have applied for the designation.

The Court clarified that any feedback must be supported by relevant and verifiable material. Submissions can be sent to the Secretariat of the Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates or through the designated email address. The deadline for sending comments has been set for April 1, 2026, at 4:30 PM.

After receiving the responses, the Committee will review the material and assess the applicants in accordance with the criteria laid down by the Court. The Committee’s recommendations will then be placed before the Full Court of the Supreme Court, which will take the final decision on granting the Senior Advocate designation.

Under Indian law, courts may designate advocates as Senior Advocates based on factors such as their standing at the Bar, professional integrity, legal expertise, and contributions to the development of the law. Advocates who receive this designation are subject to certain professional restrictions but are widely recognised for their distinguished standing in the legal community.
