  • Supreme Court Pulls Up West Bengal Over Delay in Kolkata Metro Work at Chinrighata

    Supreme Court of India

March 23, 2026 : The Supreme Court on Monday expressed strong dissatisfaction with the West Bengal Government over delays in executing pending work related to the Kolkata Metro project in the Chinrighata area.

A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant directed the State authorities to comply with the earlier order of the Calcutta High Court and extend full cooperation to the Metro Railway administration.

The State had earlier approached the apex court seeking additional time to complete the work, which involves imposing a traffic block in the Chinrighata stretch.

The Court observed that instead of appearing before it, the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police should ensure strict compliance with the High Court’s directions.

It further made it clear that the State Government cannot cite the Model Code of Conduct as a ground to delay the project, noting that the matter has been pending for a considerable period.
