Supreme Court Urges Punjab & Haryana High Court to Hear Gurugram Demolition Plea Immediately

April 27, 2026 : The Supreme Court of India on Monday directed the Punjab and Haryana High Court to urgently take up a matter concerning the ongoing demolition drive in Gurugram.

A Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice J. Joymalya Bagchi asked the High Court’s Chief Justice Sheel Nagu to list the issue for hearing on the same day.

The matter was mentioned by Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, who flagged concerns over large-scale demolitions of ‘stilt plus four’ buildings in Gurugram. He argued that despite earlier directions from the High Court to adhere to the prevailing policy, authorities had proceeded with widespread demolition across several sectors.

He also highlighted the absence of prior notice to residents and the resulting hardship, seeking interim protection so affected individuals could approach the High Court.

The Supreme Court, however, noted that the structures appeared to be unauthorised and observed that the High Court was the appropriate forum to examine the grievances.

The demolition drive is being carried out by the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran across multiple areas as part of an anti-encroachment exercise. The action follows an earlier interim order of the High Court staying the ‘stilt-plus-four’ building policy while hearing a batch of petitions.

In its earlier observations, the High Court had expressed concern over the strain such constructions could place on civic infrastructure, including roads, drainage, and sewage systems.

Subsequently, authorities initiated action against alleged violations such as misuse of stilt parking and construction beyond sanctioned plans. Residents, however, maintain that the High Court’s order only stayed the policy and did not authorise large-scale demolitions.
