May 9, 2026 : A devastating fire broke out in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area early Sunday morning, claiming nine lives and leaving several others injured. The blaze erupted in a four-storey residential building, prompting an immediate emergency response.
According to the Delhi Fire Services, information about the incident was received in the early hours, following which fourteen fire tenders were dispatched to the spot. Fire officer Mukesh Verma stated that the flames had engulfed multiple floors of the building. Rescue teams managed to evacuate 15 people during the operation. The fire was eventually brought under control by around 6:25 AM, and firefighting operations have since concluded.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. In a social media message, he extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He also directed authorities to ensure proper medical care, along with immediate relief and support for those affected.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed the incident “extremely tragic” and assured that the Delhi government stands firmly with the victims’ families. She stated that senior officials from the local administration, Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Delhi Fire Service, and Delhi Police are actively engaged in rescue and relief efforts. The situation continues to be closely monitored to ensure all necessary assistance reaches those impacted.
Authorities are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the fire, and further investigation is underway.
