May 28, 2026 : In a time when stories of growing distances within families have become increasingly common, an emotional and inspiring incident from Surajpur has emerged as a powerful example of humanity, family values, and sensitive administration. A positive intervention by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Surajpur, helped reunite an elderly couple with their family after years of separation.
The elderly couple, Shri Shankar Prasad and his wife, residents of Patna police station area in Korea district, had spent their lives treating their brothers’ children as their own and raising them with affection and responsibility. However, over time, family disputes created a rift that eventually forced the couple to leave their home and seek shelter at the “Sneh Sambal Old Age Home” in Tilsiva, Surajpur.
On May 25, DLSA Surajpur Secretary Ms. Payal Topno conducted a surprise inspection of the old age home. During the visit, she learned about the couple’s painful circumstances and chose to address the matter with compassion rather than as a mere administrative formality. The authority immediately initiated efforts to reconnect the family and counselled the relatives about their legal as well as moral responsibilities towards senior citizens.
The counselling and humanitarian efforts of the authority yielded positive results when Shri Shankar Prasad’s younger brother, Shri Krishna, along with his wife Smt. Sumitra and son, personally arrived at the old age home and agreed to take the elderly couple back home with dignity and respect. The emotional reunion left everyone present deeply moved as tears of happiness and relief filled the eyes of the elderly couple after seeing their loved ones again.
Third Additional District and Sessions Judge Shri Diamond Kumar Gilhare and Judicial Magistrate Ms. Himanshi Sarraf were also present on the occasion. The judges appreciated the family’s sensitive decision and emphasized that caring for senior citizens is a moral responsibility of society.
A special legal awareness programme was also organised under NALSA’s “Legal Services Scheme for Senior Citizens, 2016.” During the programme, detailed information was shared regarding the rights and legal protections available to senior citizens under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
This emotional initiative demonstrated that broken relationships can be rebuilt through sensitivity, dialogue, and positive efforts. The initiative by DLSA Surajpur not only succeeded in reuniting a family but also sent a strong social message that elderly people are not a burden, but the greatest treasure of a family.
