New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant has reiterated that the doors of the Supreme Court remain open to every Indian citizen, emphasising that any common citizen or member of an elected body has the right to approach the country’s highest court for legal remedies.
Justice Surya Kant said that the Supreme Court welcomes petitions from citizens and elected representatives alike. He emphasised that the Court would hear their grievances and provide appropriate relief wherever justified under the law. His remarks underline the principle that access to justice is a fundamental aspect of the judicial system and that every eligible petitioner has the right to seek legal redressal before the apex court.
Responding to the INDIA bloc’s request for a meeting, the Chief Justice said he had received a letter seeking an appointment the previous day. He confirmed that he had responded to the letter the previous night, explaining the reasons why he was unable to meet the delegation.
The CJI’s statement highlights the distinction between approaching the Supreme Court through the established legal process and seeking a personal meeting with the Chief Justice. While citizens and representatives can invoke the Court’s jurisdiction in accordance with applicable law and procedure, any relief depends on the merits of the case and the relevant legal provisions.
The remarks reaffirm the Supreme Court’s role as the country’s highest judicial forum, where legal grievances are considered through established procedures and decisions are guided by law.
