January 20, 2026 : The All India Institute of Medical Sciences has reported a major milestone in advanced surgical care, announcing that its Department of Surgical Disciplines has carried out more than 1,000 robotic surgeries over the last 13 months.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Head of the Department Professor Sunil Chumber said the adoption of robotic surgery has significantly improved patient outcomes. He noted that patients experienced around a 50 percent reduction in post-operative pain compared to conventional open surgeries. Hospital stays were also shortened by nearly 30 percent, helping lower overall treatment costs. In addition, the use of minimal incisions has led to a 40 percent decline in surgical site infections.

In an exclusive interaction with Akashvani, Professor Chumber highlighted AIIMS’ focus on continually upgrading patient care. He explained that robotic systems allow surgeons to perform complex procedures with a high degree of precision and control, while keeping the institution aligned with global developments in medical technology.

Professor Chumber also pointed out that the introduction of robotic surgery has strengthened medical training at AIIMS. Resident doctors are now receiving hands-on exposure to robotic procedures during their residency, and the postgraduate training programme in this field is comparable with leading medical institutions worldwide.
