Raipur : A delegation led by Amit Jogi, President of Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J), submitted a memorandum addressed to Governor Ramen Deka at Lok Bhavan, urging a halt to the proposed anti-conversion bill being brought by the state government.
In the memorandum, Jogi stated that introducing such a significant and sensitive legislation without adequate deliberation and broad-based consultation is inconsistent with democratic principles. He emphasized that the bill touches upon critical issues including religious freedom, individual rights, tribal identity, and social harmony, and therefore requires detailed discussion.
He further pointed out that a petition related to the matter is currently pending before the Supreme Court. In such a situation, any legislative action should be undertaken with utmost caution and in adherence to constitutional norms.
The delegation demanded that instead of presenting the bill in the current session, the government should engage in wider consultations with stakeholders, allow sufficient time for legislative scrutiny, and consider ongoing judicial proceedings. Jogi added that enacting laws in haste is neither in the interest of democracy nor conducive to maintaining social harmony.
