Cyber Fraudsters Fake Rape Case Arrest to Digitally Detain Retired Engineer, Dupe Him of ₹80,000

April 8, 2026 : A retired engineer from the electricity department was duped of ₹80,000 by cyber fraudsters who falsely claimed that his son had been arrested in a rape case. The scammers digitally “detained” the victim by threatening him with legal consequences and coercing him into transferring money.

According to the complaint filed at DD Nagar police station, the 68-year-old victim, Aparajita Pratap Singh, received a call on April 4 from an unknown number. The caller posed as a Delhi Police officer and informed him that his son, an Indian Engineering Services officer posted in Delhi, had been arrested in a rape case. The fraudster further threatened that the father could also face arrest if immediate action was not taken.

The caller demanded ₹1.5 lakh to “settle” the matter and secure the son’s release. Frightened by the situation and under pressure, the elderly victim transferred ₹80,000 in multiple installments to the account provided by the scammers.

After making the payment, the victim grew suspicious and contacted his son directly. Upon speaking with him, he realized that the entire story was fabricated and that he had been cheated.

Following this, he approached the police and filed a complaint against the unknown cyber criminals. Authorities are currently investigating the case and tracking the accused using bank transaction details.
