The Election Commission of India has decided to issue show-cause notices to several Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers in West Bengal for failing to upload a substantial number of voter documents during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision process.
According to an official source, nearly 1.15 lakh documents remain pending for upload even four days after the completion of hearings. The Commission had explicitly directed that every rejected application must clearly mention the specific reason for rejection. However, reports suggest that this instruction has not been followed in multiple instances.
Concerns have also been raised over the slow pace of disposal of applications, along with reports of sudden system disruptions in certain areas. Citing these issues, the Commission has moved to initiate action against the concerned officers.
Meanwhile, the All India Trinamool Congress has alleged that Special Roll Observer C. Murugan violated a Supreme Court directive by communicating instructions to officials through WhatsApp.
Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agrawal rejected the allegation, stating that Mr. Murugan did not issue any independent orders but merely clarified the Commission’s existing instructions. He further said that Mr. Murugan would be spoken to in view of the complaint. The Chief Electoral Officer’s office has not responded to the party’s demand seeking Mr. Murugan’s resignation.
