  • ICAR Chief Calls for Stronger Farmer-Focused Research to Tackle Emerging Crop Diseases

Calling for sharper alignment between laboratory research and farm-level needs, Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, on Friday reviewed ongoing research programmes at the ICAR–National Institute for Biotic Stress Management in Raipur.

During the review, Dr. Jat stressed the need for farmer-oriented basic and strategic research to effectively address emerging biotic stresses such as pests, diseases and invasive organisms that threaten crop productivity. He underlined that while strengthening fundamental research is essential, its real value lies in timely translation into practical, field-ready technologies that directly benefit farmers.

Dr. Jat was accompanied by Dr. D. K. Yadav, Deputy Director General (Crop Sciences), and Dr. Rajbir Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension). The delegation was received by Dr. P. K. Rai, Director of ICAR–NIBSM, along with scientists, students and staff of the institute.

Briefing the visiting team, Dr. Rai outlined the institute’s mandate, ongoing research initiatives and key achievements in the area of biotic stress management. He highlighted efforts to develop science-based solutions for managing pests and diseases, with a focus on improving crop resilience and ensuring sustainable agricultural production.

Reviewing the institute’s progress, Dr. Jat called for greater innovation, interdisciplinary research and convergence across scientific domains to enhance the relevance and on-ground impact of research outcomes. Interacting with scientists and students, he emphasized the importance of problem-driven research aligned with national agricultural priorities and farmers’ real-world challenges, while appreciating the institute’s contributions towards sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.

The visit concluded with an interactive discussion, reaffirming ICAR’s commitment to strengthening agricultural research, promoting innovation and ensuring effective dissemination of technologies for the benefit of the farming community.
