  • Japan PM Sanae Takaichi and Cabinet Resign Ahead of Parliamentary Vote to Reappoint Government

    Japan PM Sanae Takaichi

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her cabinet resigned on Wednesday, submitting their letters collectively during a cabinet meeting as parliament prepared to convene for a new session later in the day.

The resignations come as part of the formal process before the Diet elects a prime minister. Lawmakers in both chambers are set to vote this afternoon, after which the newly elected premier will move quickly to finalise cabinet appointments. The chief cabinet secretary is expected to announce the new lineup soon after the vote.

Takaichi, who serves as president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, is widely expected to be reinstated as prime minister. Her party currently holds more than two-thirds of the seats in the powerful House of Representatives, following a decisive victory by the ruling coalition in the February 2026 general election.
