A delegation of farmers from Ranchi district in Jharkhand undertook an inter-state study visit to Durg district in Chhattisgarh to explore innovative agricultural practices and promote climate-resilient, sustainable farming. The initiative aims to strengthen technical cooperation and knowledge exchange between states while equipping farmers to better respond to the challenges posed by climate change.
During the visit, the delegation toured Karga village in Patan block, where they observed wheat cultivation using the zero tillage method. They also reviewed a field demonstration of the high-temperature tolerant wheat variety ‘Kanishka’. The farmers were introduced to the practice of cultivating tivda through the utera method, which utilizes residual soil moisture after paddy harvest in rainfed areas. In addition, they examined the technique of growing short-duration ‘Rajeshwari Phule’ pigeon pea along field bunds. Interactions with progressive local farmers provided practical insights into achieving higher yields at lower production costs and improving overall profitability.
The delegation also visited the Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Pahanda (A), where scientists shared detailed guidance on the scientific cultivation of coriander, tivda, gram, mustard, and turmeric. Demonstrations were conducted on low-cost vermicompost production, quality seed production, and horticulture nursery management. The visiting farmers showed keen interest in organic and resource-conserving agricultural practices.
Representing the Jharkhand Agriculture Department, Mr. Vikas Kumar accompanied the group. Technical guidance was provided by Dr. Vijay Jain, Senior Scientist and Head of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, along with Dr. Kamal Narayan Verma, Dr. Lalita Ramteke, Dr. Aarti Tikriha, Ms. Srishti Tiwari, and Ms. Harshana Chandrakar.
The farmers from Jharkhand described the study tour as highly beneficial and expressed their commitment to adopting the learned techniques in their respective regions. The initiative is expected to further strengthen inter-state collaboration and promote innovation-driven, profitable agriculture.
