Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns Amid Ongoing Impeachment Inquiry Over Cash Discovery Row

Justice Yashwant Varma, a judge of the Allahabad High Court, has resigned from his post while an inquiry against him is still ongoing.

In his resignation letter to the President of India, he said he was stepping down with “deep anguish” and with immediate effect. He also sent a copy of the letter to the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant. Justice Varma stated that he did not want to go into the reasons for his resignation and described it as an honour to have served as a judge.

The resignation comes while a committee set up by the Lok Sabha is investigating allegations against him. This committee was formed by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968 after 146 Members of Parliament signed a motion seeking his removal.

The inquiry is linked to an incident on March 14, 2025, when a large amount of cash was reportedly found at his official residence in Delhi during a firefighting operation. At that time, Justice Varma was serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court.

Justice Varma had also challenged the Speaker’s decision to set up the inquiry committee, but his petition was dismissed earlier this year.
