March 17, 2026 : The National Green Tribunal has granted additional time to authorities and a private school in Central Delhi to file their responses in a suo motu matter concerning alleged health and environmental risks linked to a policy permitting only plastic water bottles for students.
The matter arises from a news report titled “Parents object to metal Water bottle ban at private school” published on January 18, 2026, which prompted the Tribunal to initiate proceedings on its own motion. During the hearing held on March 17, 2026, a Bench comprising Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Dr. Afroz Ahmad considered submissions from the parties.
Counsel appearing for the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) informed the Tribunal that its reply had already been filed. The Bench directed the registry to examine the response and place it on record subject to removal of defects. Meanwhile, the representative of the Directorate of Education sought six weeks’ time to submit its reply, which was allowed.
The Tribunal also noted that service of notice on one of the respondents remained incomplete and instructed the registry to take fresh steps to ensure proper service.
In a significant development, the Bench impleaded R.S. Junior Modern School, through its Principal at Humayun Road, as a respondent in the proceedings. Counsel for the school accepted notice and was granted six weeks to file a reply. The Tribunal further directed the office to prepare an amended memo of parties reflecting the addition.
The case centers on concerns that restricting students to plastic water bottles may pose risks to both health and the environment, particularly in light of growing awareness regarding plastic usage and exposure.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on July 8, 2026.
