March 26, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a tragic ropeway accident in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, which resulted in the death of a woman and left 16 others injured.
According to media reports, the incident occurred on March 22, 2026, when devotees were returning from the Khallari Mata Temple. The rope wire of the trolley reportedly snapped mid-transit, causing it to fall abruptly, leading to casualties.
Taking serious note of the incident, the Commission observed that, if the reports are accurate, the matter raises significant concerns regarding the violation of human rights. It has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh and the Superintendent of Police, Mahasamund, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC has directed authorities to provide comprehensive information on the health status of the injured victims, along with details of any compensation granted to the next of kin of the deceased and those injured in the accident.
As per initial reports, the woman died on the spot, while the injured were rescued with the help of local residents and police personnel. All victims were first taken to the Community Health Centre in Bagbahara. Subsequently, eight critically injured individuals were referred to Raipur for advanced medical treatment.
The Commission’s intervention is expected to bring accountability and ensure that appropriate relief and corrective measures are taken in response to the incident.
