SC Orders Publication of West Bengal Final Voter List; Appoints Oversight Committee

April 6, 2026 : The Supreme Court has mandated the publication of the final supplementary voter list for West Bengal today, marking a critical step in the state’s electoral preparations. While the list must be released immediately, the Court granted judges a one-day extension—until tomorrow—to complete the digital signing of necessary documents.

In an effort to ensure transparency and efficiency, a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, alongside Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, directed the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to form a high-level oversight committee. This committee, comprising three retired Chief Justices or Judges, will monitor the performance of 19 Appellate Tribunals tasked with handling remaining voter exclusions.

  • Key highlights from the proceedings include:
    • Next Steps: The matter is scheduled for a follow-up hearing on April 13th.
    • Progress Update: Nearly 59 lakh out of 60 lakh claims and objections have already been resolved.
    • Procedural Integrity: The Court emphasized that all tribunals must strictly adhere to established legal procedures to ensure no legitimate voter is disenfranchised.
    • Logistics of Appeals: A decision is pending on whether appeals can be filed across the state or will be restricted to Kolkata.
