Law Notify, January 16, 2026 : The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to grant any relief to Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, who had challenged the decision of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to unilaterally constitute an inquiry committee into allegations involving burnt currency found at his official residence.

A Bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and S C Sharma held that the Speaker had committed no illegality in setting up the committee. The court ruled that Justice Varma was not entitled to any relief and that no interference by the judiciary was warranted in the matter.

Justice Varma had questioned the validity of the inquiry initiated by the Speaker following the discovery of burnt wads of currency notes at his New Delhi residence on March 14 last year. Subsequent to the incident, he was repatriated from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court.

The Supreme Court’s order effectively clears the way for the inquiry committee to proceed with its examination of the allegations.
