March 10, 2026 : The Supreme Court of India has observed that the time may have come for the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country.
While hearing a petition seeking to strike down certain provisions of the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937 on the ground that they are discriminatory against Muslim women, the Court said the issue raises important questions that should preferably be examined by the legislature.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and R Mahadevan noted that if the Court were to strike down the inheritance provisions under the Shariat law, it could create a legal vacuum since there is currently no statutory law governing inheritance among Muslims.
The bench observed that the matter involves wider policy considerations and would be more appropriately addressed through legislative action.
