Supreme Court Warns Against Spitting Pan Masala, Gutka Inside Court Premises

The Supreme Court of India has issued a firm warning against the practice of spitting pan masala, gutka and other chewable tobacco products within its premises, stressing that such behaviour is unacceptable inside the country’s highest judicial institution.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant reminded lawyers, litigants and visitors that the court campus must reflect dignity and discipline. The judges made it clear that spitting tobacco products in corridors, near entrances or in seating areas not only creates an unhygienic environment but also shows disregard for the institution.

During the proceedings, the bench said it was disturbed by repeated instances of people spitting inside the complex. The judges observed that these acts damage the decorum of the court and contribute to an unpleasant atmosphere for everyone present during hearings.

The court underlined that standards of cleanliness are expected in all public spaces, and even more so in judicial premises where respect for law and order should be evident in conduct. It stated that the Supreme Court campus must be kept clean at all times and that irresponsible habits such as spitting chewable tobacco will not be tolerated.

Although no specific penalties were announced, the bench indicated that strict action could follow if the warning is ignored. It also called upon members of the Bar and visitors to lead by example and ensure that their behaviour upholds the dignity of the court.

The remarks come amid wider public health concerns about the use of tobacco products in public places. Spitting pan masala and gutka has long been flagged as a hygiene issue in many parts of the country, with authorities regularly urging citizens to act responsibly.

By drawing attention to the issue, the Supreme Court has reinforced the need for civic discipline within spaces that symbolize the rule of law and the highest standards of public conduct.
