The Supreme Court has issued a strong warning to the Director General of Police of West Bengal over allegations of violence and political interference during the SIR process. The bench made it clear that the state police chief will be held personally accountable if prompt and effective steps are not taken to address objectionable remarks made by political leaders.
The Court observed that law enforcement authorities must act independently and ensure that the process remains free from intimidation or external influence. It cautioned that any failure to take initiative against misconduct or inflammatory statements could invite strict action against the DGP in future proceedings.
The bench has directed the DGP to submit a detailed report at the next hearing, outlining the steps taken in response to the complaints received so far. The matter is scheduled to be taken up again next month.
