Union Budget Expands ALIMCO’s Role to Boost Access to Assistive Technologies

January 02, 2026 : In the Union Budget, the government has assigned a key role to the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), which functions under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, to widen access to quality assistive technologies and related services across the country.

Through the newly announced Divyang Sahara Yojana, the Budget proposes support for ALIMCO to scale up the production of high-quality assistive devices, strengthen research and development, and adopt advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, in product design and service delivery.

The Budget also aims to reinforce the existing Pradhan Mantri Divyang Vayoshri Kendras and promote the setting up and modernisation of assistive technology marts. These centres are planned as retail-style hubs to serve persons with disabilities and senior citizens, improving accessibility and availability of essential devices.

According to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the Budget reflects the government’s broader approach to empowering persons with disabilities by ensuring dignified livelihoods alongside access to reliable and modern assistive devices.
