UTRC Review Meeting Held in Kondagaon to Strengthen Legal Aid for Undertrial Prisoners

April 9, 2026 : Under the guidance of Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Kondagaon, Mr. Khilawan Ram Rigri, a review meeting was conducted to strengthen and streamline work related to undertrial prisoners under the Under Trial Review Committee (UTRC).

The meeting was chaired by Gayatri Sai, Secretary, DLSA Kondagaon, and attended by officials from the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System, including Deputy Prabha Mishra, and Assistants Preeti Vishwas and Rakesh Kumar Kaivart, along with Adhikar Mitras.

The primary focus of the meeting was to assess quarterly performance, review pending cases, and deliberate on personnel identified by the National Legal Services Authority. The Secretary emphasized evaluating the quality and accessibility of legal aid being provided to prisoners and ensuring that every eligible inmate receives timely and effective legal assistance.

It was reiterated that the core objective of the UTRC is to regularly review cases of undertrial prisoners and prevent unnecessary prolonged detention. Members of the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System were directed to maintain consistent contact with jail authorities, actively engage with prisoners, and closely monitor case progress.

Special emphasis was placed on the expeditious disposal of pending cases and securing the release of eligible prisoners. Additionally, council members were instructed to conduct jail inspections at least once every month to ensure continuous oversight and effective implementation of legal aid services.
