Hyderabad, 07 January 2026 : With road accidents continuing to rise across Telangana, the Telangana State Legal Services Authority has launched a five-day awareness drive titled “Road Suraksha Abhiyan, 2026” to sensitise students, youth, and the general public on the importance of road safety.
The campaign was inaugurated on Monday at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Kundanbagh, by Justice P. Sam Koshy of the Telangana High Court, who also serves as the Executive Chairman of the State Legal Services Authority.
Addressing students, Justice Koshy referred to recent road safety data, noting that in 2025 the state recorded around 24,826 road accident cases. This marked a 5.6 percent increase compared to 2024. Of these accidents, nearly 6,500 people lost their lives, while about 14,768 sustained injuries.
He observed that the surge in accidents could be attributed to the rapid growth in the number of vehicles, especially two-wheelers and four-wheelers, and the increasing tendency among young people and students to own and use personal vehicles. Justice Koshy also pointed out that several accident cases go unreported, making the actual situation even more concerning.
Emphasising personal responsibility, he urged students to understand the objectives of the road safety campaign and to strictly follow traffic rules, particularly when they are on the road or behind the wheel. He stressed that road safety education should be formally included in school curricula to build awareness from an early age.
Drawing examples from traffic signal parks set up for student awareness in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, Justice Koshy highlighted the role of practical learning in improving road discipline. As part of the event, students were administered a road safety pledge.
Throughout the campaign, Legal Services Authorities at various levels will conduct awareness programmes in schools and colleges. These sessions aim to familiarise students with traffic rules and regulations as laid down under the Motor Vehicles Act, and to promote safer behaviour on the roads.
