The Election Commission of India has directed all District Election Officers in West Bengal to strictly ensure that only those documents mandated by the Commission and the Supreme Court are uploaded during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
In clear terms, the Commission has instructed that by 5 pm on 16 February, each District Election Officer must personally scrutinise all documents submitted by electors during the hearing phase. The ECI has warned that if any unwarranted or improper documents are found to have been uploaded after the scrutiny stage, the concerned DEO will be held accountable.
The directions were issued following a virtual review meeting of the full bench of the Commission, presided over by the Chief Election Commissioner, with the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal. The meeting was attended by all DEOs and Special Roll Observers to assess the progress and integrity of the SIR exercise.
The Commission’s intervention comes after reports surfaced from multiple districts in West Bengal regarding the uploading of improper documents. Taking a firm position, the ECI has emphasised strict compliance with prescribed norms to maintain transparency and credibility in the electoral roll revision process.
