NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Boiler Explosion in Chhattisgarh Thermal Plant; 13 Dead

April 24, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning a fatal boiler tube explosion at a thermal power plant in the Sakti district of Chhattisgarh on 14 April 2026. The incident reportedly claimed the lives of at least 13 workers and left around 20 others injured after a sudden release of extremely hot steam engulfed those present at the site.

Observing that the reported facts, if accurate, indicate serious violations of the victims’ human rights, the Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of the state. It has sought a detailed report within two weeks, including information on compensation provided to the affected workers and the current medical condition of the injured.

As per the media report dated 15 April 2026, rescue operations were undertaken by the police after the boiler was shut down and sufficiently cooled. The injured workers were subsequently admitted to various hospitals for treatment.
