April 24, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding a deadly explosion at a private firecracker manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti, Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu. The incident, which occurred on 19 April 2026, reportedly claimed the lives of at least 18 workers and left six others injured. Over 100 workers, including women, were said to be present at the factory when the blast took place.
Preliminary reports suggest that the explosion was triggered by friction during the chemical mixing process. The district had witnessed a similar incident recently, in which four persons lost their lives.
Taking note of the gravity of the situation, the Commission observed that, if the reports are accurate, the incident raises serious concerns of human rights violations. Accordingly, notices have been issued to the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu and the Superintendent of Police, Virudhunagar, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC has directed that the report include the current health status of the injured workers, progress in the investigation, and details of compensation, if any, provided to the next of kin of the deceased and the injured.
As per media reports dated 20 April 2026, the injured workers have been admitted to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.
