Delhi Government Orders Mandatory Afternoon Break for Labourers Amid Heatwave

May 3, 2026 : Amid intense heatwave conditions in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed that all labourers, in both government and private sectors, be given a compulsory break between 1 PM and 4 PM.

In a video message, the Chief Minister stated that official instructions have already been issued to ensure compliance with this measure, aimed at safeguarding workers from extreme heat exposure.

She also announced several relief initiatives to mitigate the impact of the heatwave. These include ensuring the availability of drinking water in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses, deploying ‘Jalsevaks’ at bus shelters to provide water and oral rehydration solutions (ORS), and enhancing medical preparedness in hospitals. Special cooling areas are being set up to offer relief to those affected by the soaring temperatures.
