Supreme Court to Hear Plea Against CBSE’s Mandatory Three-Language Policy for Class 9 Students Next Week

May 22, 2026 : The Supreme Court today agreed to hear next week a petition challenging the new CBSE policy that makes the study of three languages compulsory for Class 9 students from July 1.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi mentioned the matter before a Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi.

Rohatgi informed the Court that the public interest litigation had been filed by students, teachers, and parents. He argued that the revised CBSE policy effectively makes two additional languages compulsory in Class 9 and could lead to confusion and administrative difficulties for schools and students.

Seeking an urgent listing, Rohatgi requested the matter to be heard on Monday. The Chief Justice, however, stated that the case would be taken up next week during the Court’s miscellaneous hearing week.
