NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Arrest of Environmental Activists Protesting Tree Felling Near Hyderabad’s KBR National Park

May 20, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of reports alleging the arbitrary arrest and detention of five environmental activists who were protesting against tree-felling activities around Kasu Brahmananda Reddy (KBR) National Park in Hyderabad, Telangana.

According to media reports, the activists were detained by the police on 13 May 2026 and held at a police station for several hours. An FIR was reportedly registered against them under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to wrongful restraint, aggravated mischief causing damage to property, and criminal intimidation. The activists were later released on bail.

Taking note of the incident, the NHRC observed that the allegations, if found to be true, raise serious concerns regarding potential violations of human rights. In response, the Commission has issued notices to the Director General of Police, Telangana, and the District Magistrate of Hyderabad, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

As per the reports, one volunteer associated with the protest was initially detained by the police following the demonstration. Subsequently, four other environmental activists who visited the police station to inquire about his detention were also taken into custody.

The Commission’s intervention comes amid growing concerns over the treatment of environmental activists and the protection of civil liberties during peaceful protests. The NHRC will examine the reports submitted by the state authorities before deciding on any further action.
