NHRC Seeks Report on Delhi Sewage Tank Death, Injured Worker After Safety Lapses

May 27, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning the death of a worker and serious injury to another while cleaning a sewage tank at a residential property in New Ashok Nagar, East Delhi, on May 24, 2026.

According to reports, the house owner had engaged a contractor who deployed the two workers for the cleaning operation without providing essential safety equipment, including protective gear, oxygen support, masks, and other safety kits.

Observing that the reported incident, if true, raises a serious issue of human rights violation, the Commission has issued notices to the Delhi Municipal Commissioner and the Police Commissioner, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

The NHRC has directed the authorities to provide information on the progress of the investigation and details of any compensation paid to the next of kin of the deceased worker as well as to the injured worker.

As per the media report published on May 26, 2026, both workers allegedly fell unconscious within minutes of entering the sewage tank. They were immediately rushed to a hospital, where one worker was declared dead on arrival, while the other remains in critical condition.

The Commission’s intervention highlights continuing concerns over the hazardous practice of manual sewage cleaning and the failure to ensure adequate safety measures for sanitation workers.
