The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court in Jagdalpur has convicted all ten surviving accused in the Jheeram Valley Maoist attack case under various charges. Eleven accused were tried in the case, but one died during the course of the trial.
The court held all ten accused, including two women, guilty of the murder of 29 people and the attempted murder of 15 others. The court has reserved its order on the quantum of punishment and is scheduled to pronounce the sentence on September 16.
The Jheeram Valley attack took place in May 2013, when Maoists ambushed a convoy of Congress leaders in the Jheeram Valley area of Chhattisgarh. The deadly attack claimed the lives of 29 people, including several senior Congress leaders.
More than 15 people were also injured in the Maoist firing, which continued for nearly one and a half hours. The case was subsequently investigated by the National Investigation Agency. resulting in multiple arrests and ongoing legal proceedings.
