Bilaspur : The High Court of Chhattisgarh at Bilaspur has designated Shri Vivek Sharma, Advocate General of Chhattisgarh, as a Senior Advocate with immediate effect.
The designation was approved by the Full Court of the High Court of Chhattisgarh on September 1, 2026, and was formally notified through Notification No. 15405/SDSA/2026, dated September 1, 2026.
The notification states that the decision has been taken in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 16 of the Advocates Act, 1961, read with the High Court of Chhattisgarh (Designation of Senior Advocates) Rules, 2025.
The High Court has also referred to the judgment and order dated May 13, 2025, passed by the Supreme Court of India in Criminal Appeal No. 865 of 2025, Jitender @ Kalla v. State (Govt. of NCT of Delhi), while making the designation.
According to the notification, the Full Court, in its meeting held on September 1, 2026, resolved to designate Shri Vivek Sharma as a Senior Advocate with immediate effect.
The designation marks a significant professional recognition for the Advocate General, who represents the State of Chhattisgarh in constitutional, civil, criminal and other important legal matters before the High Court and, where required, before the Supreme Court of India.
The designation of Senior Advocates is governed by Section 16 of the Advocates Act, 1961. Under the statutory framework, advocates may be designated as Senior Advocates when, in the opinion of the High Court or Supreme Court, they possess outstanding ability, knowledge of law or other qualities considered necessary for such recognition.
With this Full Court decision, Vivek Sharma becomes a Senior Advocate of the High Court of Chhattisgarh with effect from September 1, 2026.
