The Delhi High Court has ordered that no victory procession shall be taken out after the declaration of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election results. The Court has also directed all student organisations and candidates to explain why electoral damages should not be imposed on them for violating election norms.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice D. K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia issued the directions while expressing serious concern over the frequent and blatant violations of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations during the DUSU elections. Voting is currently underway across various Delhi University campuses.
The High Court made it clear that the Delhi Police will be responsible for ensuring that no victory procession takes place after the results are announced. The Bench observed that police officials should not hesitate to take action merely because those involved are students.
The Court further warned that any violation of its order could result in criminal and administrative action, as well as contempt of court proceedings.
Reiterating its earlier directions, the High Court said that both the Delhi Police and Delhi University administration must take all necessary steps to prevent violations of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations and the directions issued by the High Court and the Supreme Court concerning the conduct of DUSU elections.
The directions came during the hearing of a petition alleging that certain individuals had hijacked the North Campus area of Delhi University on Wednesday, during which professors and students were allegedly assaulted.
During the proceedings, Delhi Police informed the Court that action had been taken against violations of law. The police stated that FIRs had been registered and some students had been arrested in connection with the incidents.
The High Court’s latest directions underline the importance of maintaining discipline, preventing violence and ensuring strict compliance with the rules governing student elections. The prohibition on victory processions is also aimed at preventing any escalation of tension or disruption following the declaration of the DUSU election results.
