From Advocate to High Court Judge: The Judicial Journey of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Sanjay Agrawal

August 20, 2026 : Hon’ble Mr. Justice Sanjay Agrawal, a Judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh, is scheduled to retire on 20 August 2026 upon attaining the age of superannuation. Justice Agrawal has had a long and distinguished association with the legal fraternity of Bilaspur and the Chhattisgarh High Court.

Justice Sanjay Agrawal was born on 21 August 1964 in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. He comes from a family with strong academic and legal roots. His father, late Shri Shyam Bihari Agrawal, was a retired Professor in the Zoology Department, while his mother was a homemaker. His grandfather was a well-known and respected civil lawyer, which helped shape his early exposure to the legal profession. His uncle, Shri Ravish Chandra Agrawal, Senior Advocate, served as Advocate General for the State of Chhattisgarh and is presently serving as Advocate General for the State of Madhya Pradesh.

Justice Agrawal completed his schooling and graduation in B.Sc. (Mathematics) from Bilaspur. He later pursued LL.B. from Kaushalendra Rao Law College, Bilaspur, beginning his journey toward the legal profession.

Before entering the legal field, he served as an Upper Division Teacher from 1986 to 1989. He was enrolled as an Advocate on 7 September 1989 and started practicing law under the guidance of Shri Ravish Chandra Agrawal. He practiced in the District Court at Bilaspur from 1989 to January 1997.

Thereafter, he practiced before the High Court of Madhya Pradesh from 1997 to 2000, and subsequently before the High Court of Chhattisgarh from 2000 until his elevation to the Bench. During his years at the Bar, he handled matters relating to civil, criminal, and constitutional law, with particular specialization in civil cases. While practicing before the High Court, he was also appointed as a Government Advocate, a position he held until 2007.

Justice Sanjay Agrawal was elevated as a Judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh on 29 September 2016. He was later sworn in as a Permanent Judge on 8 January 2018.

Known among colleagues and members of the Bar for his dedication to the law, Justice Agrawal is also widely recognized for his deep interest in reading and spending time in the library, reflecting his commitment to continuous learning and legal scholarship.

With a career spanning decades as a teacher, advocate, government counsel, and judge, Justice Sanjay Agrawal’s judicial journey has remained closely connected with Bilaspur and the Chhattisgarh High Court. His retirement on 20 August 2026 will mark the conclusion of a significant chapter in the state’s judicial history.
