NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Odisha Woman’s Death After 12 Years of Social Boycott

June 15, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning the death of an elderly woman who allegedly endured 12 years of social boycott in Mahuldiha village of Odisha’s Sundargarh district.

Taking serious note of the incident, the Commission observed that the contents of the report, if found true, raise significant concerns regarding the violation of human rights. Consequently, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Odisha, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

According to media reports published on June 11, 2026, the woman and her family had been subjected to prolonged social ostracisation by villagers after they failed to pay a penalty imposed by the community. The penalty was reportedly levied after the woman’s daughter had briefly left home with a man belonging to another caste.

The family’s alleged exclusion from social and community activities continued for over a decade, severely affecting their lives. The situation came to light following the elderly woman’s death, when villagers reportedly refused to assist her daughter in conducting the last rites.

The impasse was resolved only after local authorities intervened. The administration, along with the support of several local non-governmental organisations (NGOs), facilitated the funeral rites and ensured that the deceased woman received a dignified farewell.

The NHRC’s intervention highlights growing concerns over social discrimination and ostracisation practices that continue to persist in certain parts of the country. The Commission’s inquiry is expected to examine whether the actions of the villagers and the circumstances surrounding the prolonged boycott amounted to violations of the fundamental human rights and dignity of the woman and her family.

Further action by the Commission will depend on the report submitted by the Odisha government.
