May 5, 2026 : In a significant development in judicial appointments, the Supreme Court Collegium has approved the elevation of three judicial officers as Judges of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. The decision was taken during the Collegium’s meeting held on May 4, 2026.
According to the official statement, the Collegium has cleared the names of Smt. Sunitha Gandham, Shri Alapati Giridhar, and Shri Purushottam Kumar Chintalapudi, also known as Ch. Purushottama Kumar, for appointment as judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
The appointments are part of the ongoing process to strengthen the judiciary by filling vacancies in High Courts across the country. Once formally notified by the Central Government, the appointees will assume office as judges of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.
The Collegium, headed by the Chief Justice of India and comprising senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, plays a central role in recommending appointments and transfers in the higher judiciary.
