Bilaspur: Senior judicial officer Sushma Sawant on Thursday, September 10, 2026, took oath as a Judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh at Bilaspur.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at 10 am in the Chief Justice’s Court. The Chhattisgarh High Court had announced the ceremony for Sushma Sawant, Santosh Sharma and Sudhir Kumar, who were appointed as Judges of the High Court.
The appointments were notified by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on September 8 following the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium. The President appointed Santosh Sharma, Sushma Sawant and Sudhir Kumar as Judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court. The same notification separately appointed Nchumbemo Mozhui and Helen Dawngliani as Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court.
Sushma Sawant has had a long judicial career spanning more than three decades. According to her official profile on the High Court website, she joined the judicial service on April 15, 1994, and has served in several judicial and administrative positions across Chhattisgarh. She has worked as a Civil Judge, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Additional District and Sessions Judge, District and Sessions Judge and Principal District and Sessions Judge. She has also served as Judge and Principal Judge of the Family Court at Bilaspur.
She also served in the Law and Legislative Affairs Department of the Government of Chhattisgarh and was the Director of the Chhattisgarh State Judicial Academy, Bilaspur.
With her appointment and oath-taking, Sushma Sawant has now joined the Bench of the High Court of Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur as a Judge.
Note: Sushma Sawant has not been appointed as an “Additional Judge” of the Chhattisgarh High Court. The official notification specifically describes her appointment as “Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court.” The term “Additional Judge” in the same notification applies to the two appointments made to the Gauhati High Court.
