Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant has said that a justice system capable of delivering timely and reliable decisions plays a crucial role in building global trust, improving the ease of doing business and making a country more attractive for investment and economic growth.
Addressing the 11th BRICS Legal Forum in New Delhi, Justice Surya Kant said strong institutions, particularly an efficient justice delivery system, form the foundation of economic development by ensuring trust, predictability and stability through a firm commitment to the rule of law.
The CJI reiterated that the rule of law is the foundation on which societies and civilisations build their aspirations. He pointed out that India had progressed from being placed among the lower quarter of the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business rankings to entering the top 100.
Justice Surya Kant emphasised that the speed and reliability with which courts resolve disputes have a direct impact on a country’s credibility among global investors. He highlighted timely contract enforcement and judicial efficiency as important factors in creating a stable business environment and encouraging international investment.
The CJI also proposed the establishment of a BRICS Judicial Fellowship and a shared jurisprudence repository to strengthen cooperation among the judiciaries of BRICS member countries. Such initiatives, he said, could facilitate greater exchange of judicial knowledge, experience and legal developments among participating nations.
