February 27, 2026 : Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the country’s largest steelmaking public sector enterprise and a Maharatna company, has supplied the entire requirement of special-grade steel for INS Anjadip, constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE).
INS Anjadip is the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) corvette to be commissioned into the Indian Navy. It follows INS Arnala and INS Androth, which were inducted last year. The ASW-SWC corvettes are being built indigenously to replace the Navy’s aging Abhay-class vessels and to strengthen coastal defence capabilities.
For the eight ASW-SWC corvettes under construction at GRSE, SAIL has supplied approximately 3,500 tonnes of special-grade steel. The material was sourced from SAIL’s integrated steel plants at Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela, reflecting the robustness of India’s domestic industrial and supply chain ecosystem.
This development underlines SAIL’s ongoing contribution to defence indigenisation and its role in reducing reliance on imports. Over the years, the company has supported several major naval projects by supplying specialised steel, including INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri, INS Nilgiri and INS Surat. The supply for INS Anjadip further reinforces India’s push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
