NHRC Seeks Report from Madhya Pradesh Government Over Toddler Losing Eyesight Due to Alleged Medical Negligence

July 3, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that a one-and-a-half-year-old toddler lost his eyesight due to medical negligence at the Civil Hospital in Banda, located in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district.

According to the Commission, the child was admitted to the hospital after suffering from a cold and redness in his eyes. The media report alleged that doctors mistakenly administered nasal drops into the child’s eyes instead of the prescribed eye medication. Following the alleged error, the toddler developed a severe eye infection that ultimately resulted in permanent loss of vision.

Taking serious note of the incident, the NHRC observed that if the allegations reported in the media are found to be true, they indicate a grave violation of the child’s human rights and raise serious concerns regarding the standard of medical care provided at a government healthcare facility.

The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, directing the state government to submit a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The report is expected to include the findings of the inquiry, the medical treatment provided to the child, and the action taken against those found responsible.

According to the media report published on 30 June 2026, after the incident at the Banda Civil Hospital, the child was referred to the District Hospital and later shifted to AIIMS Bhopal for advanced treatment. However, doctors reportedly informed the family that the child’s eyesight could not be restored despite medical intervention.

The NHRC’s intervention underscores the importance of accountability in public healthcare institutions and the need to ensure that medical negligence, particularly in cases involving children, is thoroughly investigated. The Commission will examine the report submitted by the state government before deciding on any further course of action.

The case has once again highlighted concerns over patient safety, adherence to medical protocols, and the responsibility of healthcare providers in government hospitals. The outcome of the NHRC’s inquiry is expected to determine whether administrative or legal action will be recommended against those responsible.
