NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance After Dozens of Girls Fall Ill in Ahmedabad Hostel Food Incident

April 9, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning a suspected food contamination incident at a girls’ hostel in the Memnagar area of Ahmedabad.

According to reports, the incident occurred on April 5, 2026, when nearly 57 girls fell ill after consuming food served at the hostel. The affected students reportedly experienced symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. Of them, around 18 girls required hospitalization, while the others were kept under medical observation.

Taking serious note of the matter, the Commission observed that if the contents of the report are accurate, it raises concerns about a potential violation of the human rights of the affected students, particularly with regard to their health and safety.

The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Gujarat and the Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The Commission has sought information on the current health condition of the victims as well as the progress of the investigation into the incident.

The case highlights ongoing concerns around food safety standards and supervision in institutional facilities such as hostels, especially those housing young students.
