NHRC Seeks Report After 60 Bihar School Students Fall Ill Following Mid-Day Meal in Nalanda

May 26, 2026 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of reports that around 60 students fell ill after consuming a mid-day meal at a government-run school in Bihar’s Nalanda district on May 21, 2026. The students reportedly suffered from vomiting, stomach pain, nausea, and loose motion shortly after eating the meal and were admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Taking note of the incident, the Commission observed that the allegations, if found to be true, raise serious concerns regarding the violation of the students’ human rights and their right to safe and adequate nutrition in educational institutions.

The NHRC has issued a notice to the District Magistrate of Nalanda, seeking a detailed report on the incident within two weeks. The Commission is expected to examine the circumstances that led to the reported food contamination and assess whether established safety protocols were followed.

According to media reports, the mid-day meal was allegedly served to students without undergoing the mandatory tasting process by teachers before distribution. The lapse came under scrutiny after several students complained of illness. Reports further stated that a teacher later consumed the same food to verify its safety but also fell sick and required hospitalization.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over food safety standards in school meal programmes and the need for strict adherence to prescribed guidelines to protect the health and well-being of children.
